Transparent Ultra-Lightweight Skins

ETFE Roof & Facade Systems

SIPANEL coordinates ETFE system type, panel geometry, foil layers, print pattern, perimeter frame, welds, air network, sealing, and structural interfaces before fabrication.

Technical review for lightweight transparent ETFE systems.

ETFE Is Not a Simple Transparent Sheet; It Is a Complete Skin System

Single-layer tensioned foil and multi-layer cushions differ in structure, thermal behavior, equipment, and maintenance.

Panel geometry, size, weld pattern, and perimeter frame must match loads, architectural form, and fabrication limits.

ETFE cushions need continuous low-pressure air supply and monitoring; one-time inflation is not an operating strategy.

Layer count, print or frit, and transparency must be coordinated with daylight, glare, and thermal performance.

Edges, drainage, sealing, and moisture management affect the complete system.

Engineering Control Before ETFE Execution

01

System Type and Skin Performance

Transparency, daylight, solar control, thermal behavior, form, span, environmental loads, and maintenance level are reviewed before selecting single-layer or cushion ETFE and layer arrangement.

02

Geometry, Frame, and Panel Engineering

Panel division, curvature, aluminium frame or support structure, tolerances, and connection reactions are coordinated with architecture and structure.

03

Patterning, Welding, Air, and Procurement

Foil cutting patterns, weld lines, edge details, profiles, gaskets, air tubes, air supply unit, sensors, and part lists are finalized before fabrication.

04

Installation, Pressure Setting, and Skin Testing

Frames and foils are installed, air and sealing paths checked, working pressure set by design, and cushions, edges, drainage, and monitoring tested.

Independent Guidance for ETFE Selection

ETFE should be compared with glass, polycarbonate, and other transparent coverings at complete-system level: weight, transparency, solar control, thermal behavior, rain acoustics, geometry, support structure, air equipment, repair access, and lifecycle cost.

Complete-system comparison

Low foil weight alone is not enough; frame, air supply, controls, and maintenance are part of the decision.

Single layer or cushion

Tensioned foil and pneumatic cushion systems have different structural, equipment, and operating requirements.

Distinct from daylighting hub

The transparent roofing page remains the parent for daylighting choices; ETFE is the specialist page for foil and cushion systems.

ETFE Covering FAQ

What is ETFE and how is it different from glass?

ETFE is a lightweight transparent polymer foil used as a tensioned single layer or multi-layer cushion. Its structural, thermal, acoustic, connection, and maintenance behavior differs from glass and must be compared as a full system.

What is the difference between single-layer and cushion ETFE?

Single-layer foil is usually stabilized by tension and sometimes a cable net. A cushion consists of welded layers and requires continuous low-pressure air to maintain shape.

Can an ETFE cushion be inflated once and left alone?

No. Pneumatic cushions remain connected to continuous low-pressure air supply and control to respond to temperature changes, wind, and minor leakage.

How are daylight and solar heat controlled?

Layer count, print or frit, coverage percentage, geometry, and in some systems layer movement can be used to tune daylight and solar gain.

What happens during a power failure?

Power-loss, pressure-loss, alarm, backup, and response-time scenarios must be defined in the air-unit design and operating documents for the specific project.

What is needed for an initial ETFE review?

Plans, sections, geometric model, span and panel dimensions, location, design loads, daylight and solar-control needs, thermal target, support structure, service access, and architectural requirements.
